The Hidden Spark

A Collection of Small Sculptures
A matchbox is an object of quiet contradictions. Modest in scale and familiar in form, it holds
the promise of a spark — a small gesture capable of setting something much larger in motion. It
is a tool of everyday utility, a source of warmth and light, and a metaphor for the ignition of
ideas. Yet, within this promise lies a note of caution: fire can illuminate and comfort, but it can
also consume.

This collection of small sculptures explores the matchbox as both an object and an idea. Moving
between the abstract and the recognisable, the works inhabit a space where the familiar form of
the matchbox becomes a point of departure for experimentation. Through subtle distortions,
reductive gestures and a considered attention to material, the sculptures invite the viewer to look
beyond the ordinary and reconsider an object that is often overlooked precisely because of its
familiarity.

The works are made in air-drying clay, shaped through a reductive process and finished with
painted metallic surfaces. The metallic finish evokes a sense of nostalgia, recalling the material
memory of traditional bronze sculpture, while lending the objects an unfamiliar presence. What
was once an unassuming instrument of daily life becomes something to be contemplated, an
artefact suspended between memory, function and abstraction.

For the artist, the making of these sculptures is as significant as their final form. Each piece
carries the imprint of formative experimentation, emerging from a process that is often
meditative. Repetition, reduction and the gradual discovery of form become acts of
concentration, allowing ideas to surface through the physical engagement with material. The
sculptures are therefore not merely representations of matchboxes; they are records of a search
for form, for meaning and for the moment when an idea catches fire.

Together, the eight works reflect on the latent potential held within small, ordinary things. They
suggest that the spark need not be spectacular, nor the object that contains it extraordinary.
Sometimes, the possibility of transformation resides in the simplest of forms, waiting quietly to
be recognised.

The Hidden Spark is an invitation to pause before the familiar, to consider the delicate
relationship between utility and memory, creation and caution, and the everyday object and the

ideas it can ignite.

The title connects the matchbox's practical function with the artist's meditative process of experimentation, while leaving room for viewers to bring their own associations to the sculptures.
